Advice that Changed my Photography Forever!
Allow your camera gear to climatize for example turn the heaters off in the car don't take your camera out of the bag until the temperature equalises so condensation does not build up internally in camera abd lenses
This is a must watch video for anyone starting their photography journey. I've been snapping away for over 50 years but still pick up a few gems from your output. Top video Ian, great work.
Glad it was helpful! 👍
As an experienced landscape photographer I found this video useful and informative. I'm new to Milanote (using it for a couple of weeks now) and I'm learning how to use it, early experience is it's going to be very useful and will replace my scruffy notebook.
Great to hear!
I like your focus was on general gear and not specific brands/models and you mentioned that sensor size is a reasonable issue to consider for anyone, it's not full frame or else as each size has technical advantages and disadvantages.
very true, thanks for watching 👍
A very good lesson
thanks 🙏
I always miss one editing software that i think it's superb, and this is darktable. I know that is free software, but i think that it's very powerfull and it can be at least as good as lightroom
I've never tried it, but i've heard its decent 👍
your shots are all lovely 👌i really like the compositions. Thank you for sharing everything
First of all, you need to get the proper places. It's not have to be a World Heritage Site, but there has to be a some wow factor. If it's not possible then it's better to focus something else. Like a wildlife photography.
I think it depends what resonates with the individual. There's lots of photos to be had in local woodlands or down at our feet, exploration is key 👍
Great one Ian, well thought out and presented, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
So that's why my Camera buttons were really sticky and basically acting sh1t after 6 weeks traveling through Central America. beaches, mountains and rain forests did not go down well! Thanks for the tips, no-one has said what you say.
Interesting you use an APSC. I love my canon 7Dii. I'm told all the time I need a FF mirrorles, but to be honest I don't have much room in my bag, and those FF zoom lenses are huge. I take a 10-18, 18-135, sometimes my 105 macro and sometimes my 55-250. With the exception of the 105 macro they are all small and light fitting in a small bag in a neoprene pouch. I usually don't have room for a tripod but DXO photolab Denoise and or Topaz gets rid of noise satisfactory up to 16,000 ISO. I like to think that my AI Denoise makes up for not having IBIS. Only need a tripod for long exposure. I recently discovered that if I intentionally focus on a landscape and intentionally move my upper body forward incredibly slowly with my finger on continuous autofocus I shake much less than trying to keep still. On a lens with IS such as the canon 18-135 EFS IS I can shoot at 1/10 sec moving moving my body slowly forward. Keeping still 1/35. Let me know if this works for you too. It's made a huge difference to my hand held sharpness.
Thanks buddy, great tips 👍
Thanks for sharing.
Great advice as always, Ian., and so well explained.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Ace this mate, value galore 👍🏻
Every Thursday evening is Henry and Ian video time. Just watching your video Henry. I like the leaf.
@@christophermason7735oh class mate, I appreciate the support and I know Ian does too!! Cheers, I was delighted with that leaf shot 😃
cheers mate 👍
Much appreciated 👍
Hi nice video can u help trying to take a photo of a landscape with dark and light colours what do l do.
You can bracket your photos to help increase your cameras dynamic range and blend the images in post production. Or wait for a more favourable lighting situation 👍
I recently went for full frame from APSC, however, I have had a 70-350 mm tele ion my APSC which I now keep on my a6700 as its got bird focus/animal focus :-) this is now my dedicated wildlife setup. This allows me to focus on my full frame landscape through my 28-75 zoom and an 18mm prime. I don't intend to buy a flash lens for my full frame camera when I have something which is quite acceptable. A great video again and just bought the e-book so looking forward to reading that also.
I always learn something from your videos. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you find the videos helpful 👍
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Is there any particular order to put filters on when stacking multiple ones?
another great informative video
A really thoughtful, informative, organized and well presented video Ian! Great advice and loved your photos you shared as the video progressed. And so impressed with your beautiful England.
Thanks so much 👍
Buy desiccant packages (the little packets that say do not eat that come in clothes and different products to keep them dry) and keep them in your camera cube and wherever you keep your gear, changing them out every once in a while for new ones. Then when you’ve exposed any of your gear to moisture or our storing it for long periods of time, you will know that it is staying dry. 👍
Nice vid, a good list you put together, glad I already do most of these things, I thought I was overdoing it so its good see its reasonble treatment of gear.
9:17 Always close your bag, these extra five seconds will prevent your equipment from falling out if you forget that the bag is open. I learned it the hard way by damaging two lenses.
It's 2024 and I tried lightroom the other day with and RAF file, still get worms and image degradation when zoomed in and they still haven't fixed this despite it being an issue. The converter program isn't free another cost and a waste of time when you should be able to upload and start editing straight away. Being using capture for years and will continue to do so.
I always keep silica gel packs in my camera bag. The ones I have are reasonably large and they are great for storage.
If your camera has a Focus Hold button, implementing BBF is practically a downgrade. There are considerable disadvantages. First, you loose a programmable custom button that could be used for something else. The selection of the button to be used for BBF is further narrowed down because you have to be able to reach it comfortably with your thumb as you press the shutter with your finger. This is needed in a snapshot situation. Second, you have added an extra step to taking a picture and in doing so, have slowed yourself down in all unpremeditated snapshot situations. Third, if you choose BBF you have stick with it for the rest of your life. You obviously need to stick to one of two habits - BBF or normal, i.e. coupled to the shutter button. Fourth, it is a myth that without BBF you have to half-press the shutter. Actually you can simply press the shutter fully down straight away. The only prerequisite is that you have activated AF, center area, and face priority. At the press of the button the camera does all its automatic stuff "as fast as it can" and then takes the shot. The internal delay could be the range of 20 ms. I would never propagate BBF as a solution for non-specialized photography. In the situations where BBF can be useful either MF or low aperture and high DOF are reasonable solutions and do not entail drastically changing the main user interface to your camera. Needles to say, I have tried it.
My process is to try to change the lens in the bag using it as a shield against wind and dust. First I loosen the rear cap on the lens I'm going to install. I then cap the front of the lens I'm taking off. grab a spare lens cap and have it ready to cap the rear of the lens I'm removing, and then quickly remove the other cap and install the lens. BUT that being said, it's important to consider the conditions you are in before you actually think about changing lenses. For example, if it's windy it may not be a good time to change a lens and one good reason to perhaps carry two cameras with two different lenses attached, so you can avoid lens changes and it can speed up your workflow too, but not everybody has a second camera or identical cameras (or two cameras with the same resolution) necessarily.
Don't buy mirrorless. Buy a used D700 Nikon or Canon5d mkIII and bury yourself in lighting and fast prime lenses. Avoid stupid big lenses unless you want to do wildlife.
Good points. That last image was simply wonderful.
Wonderful presentation
You're never lonely when you've got a black and white dog with you.

I have always some dehumidifier silica bags, like these they put into medicine bottles and leave them in bags . I'm not sure it really works in long term but so far I had no troubles
Jan, it's amazingly bad and I thought I was unlucky but it happened even to you: my camera was in the camera bag but the strap was hanging out and hooked somewhere...and SLAM! camera on the floor, main circuit damaged, thank God nothing happened to lens. Repair €300 and I'm still waiting for spares. Lesson learned, the hard way
No 3 is my favourite, great tips Ian , love the shell one too
I use dry and dry (desiccant packets) inside a steel cabinet that holds my camera gear (lenses, bodies, etc) so every few weeks you just pop the dry and dry in the microwave on defrost to refresh the dry and dry so it can continue to absorb moisture and keep the humidity in the cabinet down. You can also get humidity sensors to monitor the cabinet, even reptile or pet stores have them! :) hope that helps someone!
I will be definitely be trying this! Thank you!!
great advice wunnerful photo
